Project Description

Rural Economic Development (RED)

The Rural Economic Development (RED) program funds projects that grow the local economy and remove barriers to economic development. The program supports the government’s plan to create jobs, grow the economy, and help people in their everyday lives.

Funding

50% of eligible project costs to a maximum $100,000

Eligible Projects

Applicants must be classified as:

  • A legal entity that is a not-for-profit
  • A municipality
  • A local services board
  • An Indigenous community or organization

Ineligible Projects

  • Projects that directly influence or lobby any level of government projects where the expected benefits primarily accrue to a business
  • Academic research
  • Infrastructure or capital projects (e.g., new building construction,water/wastewater treatment facilities)
  • Retail or commercial developments
  • Projects designed to improve community aesthetics and functionality
  • Projects whose sole purpose is compliance with current Requirements of Law that pertain to the current operations of the applicant
  • Projects receiving other provincial funding
  • For-profit businesses
  • Research institutions or organizations whose core business or primary activity is in the area of research and development

Eligible Costs Include:

  • Project management, including:
    • consultant’s fees
    • project-related professional fees (e.g. legal, architectural and accounting fees)
    • project evaluation
  • Minor capital, including:
    • subcontractor’s fees
    • equipment (e.g., plumbing, electrical) and structural modifications to accommodate the installation of equipment within an existing building
    • renovations and retrofits to existing structures (e.g., materials or supplies and labour to renovate an existing space)
  • Training
  • Marketing or promotion-related costs
  • Travel costs in Canada and the continental United States associated with a specific public-facing event or series of events, public-facing hospitality costs directly related to the project, subject to provincial directives (including but not limited to the current Ontario Public Sector Travel, Meal and Hospitality Expenses Directive)
  • Studies
  • Administrative costs directly related to project implementation (e.g., third-party expenses for printing or other administration)
  • Wages for new hires to work 100 percent on project-related activities

Eligible Funding Activities

You can get money to plan or implement a project. When you apply, choose the category that best suits your project:

Category 1: Planning

  • Develop plans and strategies
  • Conduct research and analysis

Category 2: Implementation

  • Implement sector development plans
  • Diversify the local economy
  • Undertake marketing and branding activities
  • Attract and retain skilled workers
