Canada Alberta Job Grant

The Canada Alberta Job Grant (CAJG) is a Canadian government funding program designed to help employers invest in training for their current and future employees. The goals of the CAJG are to increase participation of Albertans in the labour force by helping them develop the skills they need to find and keep a job. The CAJG is also an opportunity for employers to invest in training that is better aligned to job opportunities.


Up to 66% of eligible training costs to a maximum $15,000 per trainee.

*There is an individual employer cap of $300,000 of approved funding per fiscal year.

Eligible Employers

  • All private sector and non-profit employers in Alberta including sole proprietors
  • First Nations and Métis Settlements in Alberta
  • Designated Crown Corporations in communities of 100,000 people or less

Eligible Trainees

  • New or existing employees that will fill current or future job vacancies
  • Unemployed Albertans (unemployed for more than 30 consecutive days and hired by the employer for no more than 4 weeks prior to signing and submitting the CAJG application)
  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or protected persons under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada) entitled to work in Canada who are currently residing in Alberta

Ineligible Trainees

  • Temporary Foreign Workers, or anyone temporarily working in Canada
  • Self-employed individuals, company owners and their immediate family members, board or council members
  • A person who will not be employed by the applicant after the training program is completed

Training Providers

  • Must be accepted Alberta third-party training providers who are separate and distinct from the employer

Eligible Training

  • Training must be incremental, meaning that the training is in addition to the employer’s regular operational training, and would not have otherwise taken place without the grant
    • Exceptions are made where the trainee is an unemployed hire who requires training, upgrading or bridging before starting the job
  • Training must be instructional and result in a credential

Ineligible Training

  • Apprenticeship technical training programs
  • Self-study models (e.g. audio books, instructional DVDs, etc.)

Eligible Costs

  • Tuition fees or instructional fees charged by the training provider
  • Mandatory student fees
  • Textbooks or software
  • Examinations fees
  • Other required materials (supplies directly relevant to the training course undertaken and are distinct from materials required to run your business)
  • Approved travel costs for participant and trainers (outside of Edmonton and Calgary) when training is over 100 km one way for small and medium-sized organizations.

Ineligible Costs

  • Travel (except as per criteria in Appendix A)
  • Recreation/fitness fees
  • Health care fees/premiums
  • Child care costs
  • Living allowances
  • Assets your business already has or needs to operate (e.g. computers, phones, and office/worksite supplies)
  • Employee or trainee wages (such as completion bonuses, compensation wages, etc.)
  • Membership fees

Training Duration and Format

  • Minimum 21 instructional hours of training must start within 6 months of approval and be completed within 52 weeks of start date
  • Training that starts before grant is approved will not be reimbursed
  • Training can be delivered online, on-site, in a classroom or combined, on a part-time or full-time basis
